ABOUT ENAMELING

Many of the items for sale include vitreous enamel. Enameling is the art of fusing glass onto metal. The base metal for Sarah’s designs is copper. However, most all of the designs include silver components. Enameling is one of the oldest art forms that have ever been found, as it is durable and never changes color. Today, this art form is often substituted with contemporary materials such as resins. Though resin is often easier to work with, it doesn’t have the same lasting qualities or the brilliance as vitreous enamel. The enamel she uses is in a powdered form before and during the application of her designs. The enamel is then fired at 1500 degrees to become molten. The glass enamel then hardens as it cools. Sarah will enamel her work multiple times to achieve her designs.
